Trail Runners vs. Road Runners

New to trail running?  Have someone in your life that needs a 12 step program to cure them of their trail running addiction?  Here’s a great article to read over your Saturday morning comparing your average trail runner to your average road runner.  I agree with everything in there, especially the one about the calves and glutes.  I knew that being built like a Dutch speed skater would come in handy for something.

Good Morning Sunshine – Banana-Pineapple Green Smoothie

In one of my more brilliant moves, I decided that it would be a great idea to stay up until 3 am the night before I was supposed to lead a group long run at 7.  When I got up this morning, I was in serious need of a pick me up.  In my not-quite-awake daze, I threw a bunch of things in the blender with the hopes that it would be edible.  The result was a power packed tropical smoothie that got me up not one, but two infamous hills without passing out this morning.  

Banana-Pineapple Green Smoothie 

  • 2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 large ripe banana
  • 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • juice of one orange
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 2 Tbsp ground flax seed

Power Breakfast

I’ll be the first to admit that breakfast is not my strong suit.  While I am good about eating it every day, I’m not a morning person, so I tend to opt for the quick and easy.  If I have to be at work in the morning, I’m one of those that runs out the door with just enough time to go through the Starbucks drive-thru or grab a gas station breakfast (translation: cream filled Bismark and cheap coffee) on my way to work.  So when I was scheduled to open at the gym this morning, meaning getting up at 4:45 on a Saturday morning, the urge to grab some over priced coffee and a scone was beyond tempting.  Then I remembered that both the waist line and the fast food budget are in need of a little trimming, so I pulled myself out of bed, plugged in the blender, and made the chocolate banana green smoothie that Happier, Healthier, More Fit Me posted a few days ago as part of her clean eating challenge.   So instead of a calorie packed sugar fest, I had a delicious smoothie that fed my early morning chocolate craving and was packed full of protein, omega 3’s, and all kinds of other stuff that I’ve been told is really good for me.  Then I had some FREE coffee at work to get my caffeine fix in.  Win-win.

Chocolate Banana Green Smoothie

Ingredients:
2 cups baby spinach
1 cup almond milk (no almond milk, so I made mine with plain old skim)
1 frozen Banana (I used a fresh banana.  Still yummy, but a little warm)
1 tbsp cocoa
1 scoop protein powder (I used vanilla)
2 tbsp ground flax


Dinner on the run – Spicy mango veggie burgers and grilled pineapple

It’s a beautiful Minnesota summer day and the trails are calling my name.  So when it came time to decide what was for dinner, I wanted something quick and easy that was also healthy and went great with a beer (ok, maybe not the best pre-run hydration).  This is one of my go to dinner in a hurry staples: Spicy mango marinated veggie burgers topped with grilled pineapple.  Finish topping it off with a little fresh baby spinach and spicy light mayo (light mayo with some chipotle powder, chili powder, onion powder, and garlic powder to taste), and you’ve got a veggie burger that bites back.  Pair it with some spicy sweet potato fries on the side, and dinner in under 20 minutes, but it tastes like it took so much longer.  The beer is optional 🙂
